What a social media MCP server is and how to use one

A social media MCP server lets ChatGPT, Claude and other AI apps schedule posts and check results for you. What it is, how to connect one, and what to watch.

You already ask ChatGPT or Claude to write your posts. It gives you a good draft for Instagram, a shorter one for X, a version for Facebook. Then you copy each one into a different app, attach the image again, and pick the time, five times over.

A social media MCP server removes that last step. It lets your AI app work with your social accounts directly, so "schedule these for Tuesday at 9:00" actually schedules them. This guide explains what MCP is in plain words, what a social media MCP server can do, how to connect one to the AI app you use, and what to watch out for.

What MCP is, in plain words

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside tools and data. Anthropic introduced it in November 2024, and in December 2025 it was handed to the Agentic AI Foundation, part of the Linux Foundation, so no single company owns it. ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Gemini, VS Code and many other AI apps support it.

There are two sides:

  • The client is the AI app you talk to: ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and so on.
  • The server is a service that offers tools the AI can use, like "list my channels" or "schedule a post".

A "remote" MCP server lives on the internet, so you connect it once with a link and sign in, much like connecting an app to your Google account. Nothing to install.

What a social media MCP server can do

A social media MCP server turns the jobs you'd normally click through into tools the AI can call. Using Freqel's server as the example, these are the tools it offers:

Tool What you'd say
List channels "Which accounts do I have connected?"
Schedule a post "Post this to Instagram and Facebook tomorrow at 9:00"
Read the calendar "What's scheduled this week? Did anything fail?"
Cancel a post "Cancel the post about the October sale"
Check insights "Which of my posts got the most comments last month?"
Use the ideas board "Save five post ideas about behind the scenes"

The AI does the writing and the deciding; the server does the posting. Once a post is scheduled, it goes out at its time even if you've closed the chat, because it's the server, not the AI app, that publishes it.

How it works, step by step

Here's what happens when you ask for a post:

  1. You ask: "Write a post about our new autumn menu and schedule it to Instagram and Facebook for Friday at 11:00."
  2. The AI writes a version for each platform and checks which channels you have.
  3. It shows you the posts, the channels and the time, and asks you to confirm.
  4. You say yes. The AI calls the schedule tool.
  5. The server checks the post against each platform's rules, like character limits and the media each one needs, and schedules it.
  6. At 11:00 on Friday, the server publishes it to each account.

Step 3 matters. A good setup always has the AI confirm before it posts anything, and you can always say "change the Facebook version first".

How to connect one to your AI app

Each app adds MCP servers a little differently. With Freqel, the server link is the same everywhere: https://app.freqel.com/mcp.

AI app How you connect Step-by-step guide
Claude Add a custom connector, paste the link, sign in Freqel with Claude
ChatGPT Add a custom MCP server, paste the link, sign in Freqel with ChatGPT
Claude Code One command in your terminal, then sign in Freqel with Claude Code
Cursor One-click install, then sign in Freqel with Cursor
n8n and scripts An API key instead of signing in Freqel with n8n

Most apps use a sign-in: you're sent to the service, you log in and approve access, and the AI app never sees your social media passwords. Tools that run on their own, like an n8n workflow, use an API key instead.

Prompts that work

Be specific about what, where and when, and include your time zone. A few that work well:

Read the ideas in my To Do column and draft one post per weekday next week at 12:00 Stockholm time. Show me the drafts before scheduling.

Turn this paragraph from my newsletter into a short post for X and Bluesky and a longer one for Facebook. Schedule all three for Thursday at 18:00.

How did last week's posts do on Instagram and Facebook? List the top three by comments and tell me what they have in common.

Show everything that failed this month and why.

A good habit is to ask for drafts first, read them, and then say "schedule them". The AI will confirm either way, but reviewing the words is still your job. There are more examples in our guide to scheduling posts with ChatGPT.

What to watch out for

Letting an AI act on your accounts is powerful, so it's worth a few minutes of care:

  • Prefer sign-in over keys where you can. A sign-in can be revoked from either side. If you do create an API key, treat it like a password, give each tool its own key, and revoke keys you no longer use.
  • Keep the confirmation step. Don't set up a workflow where the AI posts without you seeing the text, unless you're comfortable with everything it might write.
  • Be careful with untrusted content. If you ask the AI to read an email, a web page or a document and then post, text inside that content could try to steer it. Review anything that came from outside before it goes out.
  • Check what the server can't do. Freqel's server schedules, reads and cancels posts, reads insights and uses the ideas board. It doesn't read or send direct messages or comments.
  • Know the limits. Servers limit how much an AI app can do in a day so a runaway workflow can't flood your accounts. On Freqel, AI apps and API keys can add 20 posts a day on the Free plan, 50 on Pro and 150 on Business, and a post to three channels counts as three.

Why it's worth setting up

For one post, an MCP server saves a few minutes of copy-pasting. Where it really pays off is planning: "draft next week from my ideas board", "repurpose this blog post for every channel", or "what worked last month, and do more of it" (here are the social media metrics worth asking about). The AI handles the tedious parts in one conversation, and you stay the editor.

Freqel's server works with ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and n8n, and posts to Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, Threads and Bluesky. The Freqel MCP server page has the technical details, and the AI agents overview compares every app. It's free if your accounts have fewer than 5,000 followers combined; see the plans for more.

Wrap-up

A social media MCP server connects the AI app you already use to the accounts you post to. Connect it once with a link and a sign-in, ask for posts in plain words, confirm before anything goes out, and let the server do the publishing. Start with one small job, like scheduling next week's posts from your ideas, and see how much of your social media week the conversation can take over.
